How to Prepare for Middle School Audtions:

Middle School All-State
This practice schedule is a guide to how to prepare for the audition. The music is too difficult to procrastinate, so students need to be proactive in their preparation.

- May: The music for the audition is released in the spring before school ends.
Start looking at the scales and etudes right away.
- June: Major and minor scales can be played under tempo, but correctly and steadily.
Work on the etudes in chunks, focusing on correct notes and rhythms.
- July: Scales are slowly getting faster, working up to the required tempo (120).
Continue working on portions of both etudes.
- August: Scales are at tempo, or very close.
Etudes can be played in larger chunks and begin focusing on articulations and dynamics.
- September: Scales are at tempo.
Start increasing the tempo of both etudes.
- October: Scales are ready.
Etudes are getting closer to the required tempo.
- November: Scales are ready.
Etudes are up to tempo and articulations and dynamics are perfected.
-December: Record all scales and etudes during the first week of December.

Listen to recordings of the jazz etudes to learn the style.
December:  Etudes can be played at tempo with correct notes and rhythms before Christmas break.
During Christmas break, students perfect articulations, style, and dynamics.
